About Me

My photo
I have been digiscoping for around 18 years now and through persistence and good equipment I am getting great results. I use a Swarovski 80hd spotting scope and a Sony RX100 camera which has just replaced my old faithful Nikon P5100. The majority of my bird watching takes place in County Durham in England which has a variety of different habitats from coast to moors. Digiscoping is great because it allows me to get good photos without disturbing birds. VIEW THE LATEST PHOTOBOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

Barn Owl

At last! a Barn Owl and what a beauty. This has been a real bogie bird for me and I have never had views close enough in day light hours to take a photo. This owl likes to pose and only takes a little patience befor it shows. I am very pleased - next is to try for some flying shots.

Weardale - Tree Pipit

Spent my morning searching for Redstarts and Pied Flycatchers, although I heard a Redstart in Tunstall Res. Wood, I never saw despite searching for over an hour and a half. Saw GS Woodpeckers and loads of Nuthatch though also 2 Great Crested Grebes dispaying on the resevoir.

Moved on to Bollihope searching for Ring Ouzels but it was too busy with visitors there. However I did see this fine Tree Pipit - a first for the year for me. Also Stonechat, Wheatear, and Red Grouse.

Teesdale - Black Grouse 10th April

Decided to get up real early and watch the Black Grouse do their displaying (Lech). So up at 5 and watching the grouse at 6, although they were not in their usual place I did find them. They were perhaps 120 yards away which was pushing it for digiscoping, but meant I could safely watch them without any disturbance.

video

Managed to take a few video clips which shows 2 males leching, altogether there were 12 males in the lech.

Also saw my first Redstart and Ring Ouzel of the year, plus Golden Plover, Snipe, Woodcock and heard a Merlin but didnt see it.

Potteric Carr - Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Mar 27th

Had a trip down to Potteric Carr with Low Barns Photography group with the hope of seeing Bittern and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. There was no luck with the Bittern but did see the elusive Lesser Spotted Woodpecker - a first for me.
Unfortunatley my cable release broke and I had manually press the shutter so I got the inevitable camera shake - also saw Kingfisher, Bullfinch, Heron, Chiffchaff. Was a nice day out.

Saltholme March 21st Hooded Merganser

Spent ages watching this rare bird fish and swim in a circuit around the Salholme Hide area. It was fishing up the creek where I managed to digiscope some half decent shots of it.
It got really close to the hide but the sun was glaring off the water which just silhouetted the bird - this bird has been around the area all winter, and is a North American bird.

Cowpen Bewley - Ring Necked Duck 2nd February 2010

I went down t Cowpen Bewley specifically to see the Ring Necked Duck that had been around for a while. It was very like a Tufted Duck and also came very close in - so close it was tough to digiscope it.

There were also the usual dozen or so Tree Sparrows around the feeders in the car park as well as a opportunist rat
.
